CIELA is pleased to announce an upcoming online seminar on language Diversity and Language Endangerment jointly organized with the Research Center for Humanities in South China (FAH – University of Macau). The seminar instructor is Prof. Hugo Cardoso, from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. Professor Cardoso has collaborated previously with CIELA in different events related to the topics of language contact, diversity, documentation and endangerment. Given the current pandemic and resulting travel restrictions, this seminar will be offered as an online event. It will be delivered in English and is open to all those interested in getting introduced to, or advancing their knowledge of this field. The Seminar will be held in 4 sessions of roughly 2h30 hours each.
In this course, students will, first of all, become acquainted with the observable linguistic heterogeneity of the modern world, before focusing on the issue of language endangerment. Prof. Cardoso will explore the reasons for linguistic contraction but also the reactions of stakeholders, including the (re)definition of language policies, the establishment of funding opportunities for research and activism, and a focus on fieldwork-based language documentation and archiving. The course is structured in 4 sessions and will require the autonomous exploration of additional materials provided by the instructor.
The Seminar will run on the following dates and times. All time references are based on China Standard Time (CST).
